It was pointed out in yesterday's Spain-USA broadcast that the U.S. Women's National Team has never missed a World Cup Semifinal since the tournament's inception in 1991. Here's a list of their finishes, and on the rare occasions that they didn't win the tourney, a summary of who knocked them out.
1991 - 1st
1995 - 3rd (Lost 1-0 to Norway in the Semifinals)
1999 - 1st
2003 - 3rd (Lost 3-0 to Germany in the Semifinals)
2007 - 3rd (Lost 4-0 to Brazil in the Semifinals)
2011 - 2nd (Lost on Penalties to Japan in the Finals)
2015 - 1st
2019 - ???
On only one occasion did the team that eliminated the U.S. not go on to win the World Cup. That was in 2007 when Germany defeated Brazil 2-0 to win their second title.
The U.S., having dispatched Spain, will now take on host France on Friday in Paris. Of the six teams that have advanced to the quarterfinals thus far, the U.S. is the only non-European nation to do so, the other five being Norway, England, Germany, Sweden and the aforementioned France. Later today China will take on Italy and Japan will face the Netherlands with the final two spots in the quarterfinals on the line.
